Fountain of Youth - an App for that, please!
Being surrounded by significantly younger staff members has made me keenly aware of two things. First, just how outdated my technology skills are. My staff types on an IPad so fast and accurately, it’s as if they stepped off the set of Star Trek (which they’ve of course never seen.) And second, I have more wrinkles than I had just a couple of years ago.
So, it seems like a good time to write about some fantastic foods that fights signs of aging. It’s not that juicing these items is healthier than eating the whole versions, it’s just a lot more convenient than trying to find the time to fit them into your cooking routine.
Cucumber is one of the best foods for skin health, joints, liver and kidneys. They are loaded with the mineral silica, which has been shown to slow the tissue degeneration that leads to sagging, worn-looking skin.
Celery is another amazing source of silica. Loaded with potassium and sodium, celery can help diminish excess fluid in the body that can lead to puffiness under the eyes. A single serving of celery contains 15% of the daily recommended allowance of Vitamin C. And speaking of Vitamin C, this anti-oxident protects and repairs cells throughout the body and helps form collagen, which smooths fine lines and wrinkles. Another surprisingly great source of Vitamin C is parsley.
The health benefits of pumpkins seeds are not well known, but watch for its popularity to soar. Zinc in pumpkin seeds helps maintain collagen levels naturally for more elasticity, while Vitamin A stimulates new skin cell growth and repairs existing skin damage. Selenium protects against UV damage and Vitamin E evens out skin tone and reduces wrinkles. Omega fatty acids in pumpkins seeds, as well as flax seeds and chia seeds, help fight inflammation and symptoms of arthritis.
We all know carrots are good for eyesight, but carotenoids in carrots also protect against sun damage, fight inflammation and provide relief from symptoms of arthritis. Other anti-inflammatory foods include ginger, turmeric and cruciferous vegetables like kale.
