Have you ever experienced a food hangover? Admit it! We all have.
I had the worst food hangover after a recent weekend trip to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. In fact, my fingers turned into little chubby sausages and I had to stow my wedding ring!
It turns out, one of the disadvantages of eating healthier is that you really begin to notice how crummy food affects your entire system. Sadly, many people eat poorly with such regularity, that they’ve come to accept the fatigue, bloat, inflammation and mood disorders as normal.
Here is a list of some of the top foods that weigh us down and why.
High-fructose corn syrup. Linked to obesity, brain damage, accelerated aging and even mercury poisoning, high-fructose corn syrup is being discussed quite a lot today. Huffington Post reports “high doses have been proven to literally punch holes in the intestinal lining, allowing nasty byproducts of toxic gut bacteria and partially digested food proteins to enter your blood stream and trigger inflammation.”
Ingredients you can’t pronounce. Ditching diet drinks is a great first step to protecting yourself against chronic illness and toxicity. Aspartame is comprised of methanol, phenylalanine and aspartic acid and has been linked to diabetes, fibromyalgia and certain forms of cancer. Additionally, ingredients like MSG and carrageenan are often hidden additives in the “natural” foods we want to feel good about eating, like nut milks. A great list of hidden MSG sources can be found on truthinlabeling.org
Fried foods. We all know that we should avoid hydrogenated vegetable oils and saturated fats found in butter, for example. But even oils like corn, safflower and canola oil become toxic at high heats. Deep fried foods like French fries contain traces of a toxic chemical called acrylamide which can induce cancer formation in the body.
Refined flour foods like bread and pasta. Not only are vital nutrients stripped away during the processing of flour, but most white flour products are bleached with benzoyl peroxide and bromated. Several nations, including the European Union, Canada and China have banned the use of peroxides as food additives because of health concerns. China!
Animal protein. If you get more protein from meat than from plant-based sources, you are also experiencing more inflammation, according to a new study published in Prevention. Inflammation contributes to heart disease, stroke and cancer. Making a few meals meatless is a great baby step.
Luckily for me, I make organic fresh juice every day, which helps cleanse my system after a day of indulging. And my ring fits perfectly back on my finger.
